Cowgirl to Cupcakes

Since this is my first post, I’m just going to tell you a little bit about myself and about this website.

I’m just a stubborn horse girl with two dogs and an obsession with cupcakes, DIY, and trying new recipes. I’ve learned that cooking and baking can be easy and fun, so I’m going to start sharing my adventures. (and probably misadventures as well) I speak sarcasm as a second language and tend not to filter what I say so please proceed with a sense of humor.

I’ve always been what you might call “an outdoorsy type.” I got on a horse when I was eight and fell in love. I work outside with horses, every single day. My degree is in Equine Science. Yep, I majored in horses. If you’re considering doing something that dumb, you better make sure you have a passion for it. Every day I end up covered in dirt, sweat, and things probably too gross to mention on the internet. I wouldn’t trade it for a single minute though. That’s how I’ve always been; the worlds biggest tomboy, not a girly hair on my ball cap covered head.

So imagine my surprise when I discovered a joy for baking, decorating, cooking and DIY. It all started when I was working on a ranch in the middle of West Texas. It was 90 miles to the nearest decent grocery store, and 60 miles to the nearest mediocre one. The town consisted of the ranch, a school, a post office, and two gas pumps. (Three if you counted the red diesel!) To say the least, there wasn’t a lot going on, and the nightlife was mostly limited to beer drinking. (no complaints here)

I honestly don’t remember which bout of boredom spurred the first round of cupcake baking, but very shortly after I was completely hooked. I didn’t know the first thing about baking, but I was in love with decorating cupcakes. My first few batches I made my roommate bake them and I used canned icing. I was more concerned with how they looked than how they tasted. Soon enough I was the “cupcake girl” to everybody.

Sometime during this time I was introduced to Pinterest. I quickly became obsessed with everything. Recipes, crafts, baking, decorating, etc. I literally can not have a conversation without saying, “I saw this thing on Pinterest…” One thing I hated about a lot of the recipes is how complex they were. I have a job and a life outside of cooking and baking, so I couldn’t stand how complicated some of them were. That’s when I started tweaking recipes for simplicity’s sake. I quickly found out that cooking can be fun, fast, and easy.

In West Texas I worked too many hours to think about blogging, but last year I moved to a different ranch where I have nicer hours and more time. (Plus I can get to a grocery store in almost no time; talk about living the dream) My love for cupcakes and cooking has grown to the point that I’d like to start sharing my creations. Look for more posts soon!

Enjoy!
